Push Play 01:36
How do you do? You’re the creator of a little big bang that brought me to life. I knew it the moment you pushed play. Our story begins with a secret. Just between you and me, some of your children think they’re chosen. Continuity seems present in the present tense. Forgive me if this is voiced with a deceptive cadence.
2.
Baroness/Barenness In the land where the serpents lie there’s a decent man with a diamond eye and another eye that’s made just to cry. Atop the albatross, the man consumed by wanderlust. You fear the gods but he would rather die. Over the abyss The ocean with no bottom Fun apocalypse He’s crying for nobody In the land where the seabird flies there’s sirens singing lullabies. Enchantresses romance me to the sea. Don’t you know one caught my eye as she sang in wicked spats and cries. She looks like she would like my poetry. Out of the abyss The ocean with no bottom Fun apocalypse She’s crying for nobody
3.
You can make a living in space Watch old light decay Inside a vacuum you’ll stay Turn the air away Observe the macro display A singular daybreak Who do you think you are? How do you draw an invisible line? Where do you set the bar? Exploding light takes it’s form In clouds of bulbous orange Electricity inside me Only wants to believe It grounds itself out of need Opposed to needing your feet This is what I wanted to be? A singular daydream
4.
The cyclops looks through one point of view Unearthly voices rip him in two “Get your heart out of your ass! If you want to scrutinize go to the zoo!” The voices can be big-headed as The big heads that voiced them Sky hypocrites And as for me well I’m somewhere else Where your bitching echoes through nothingness It’ll expand until I split my side It is the greatest joke of all time
5.
I awoke so deep down lit a match but couldn’t see the light She just laughed, I yelled back “You’re top half is incredible!” Gwendolyn, Gwendolyn I’m begging you please don’t turn me into dust Then she cried “Hell arise!” Bolts of lightning Twas quite frightening Vitrified crystalline I became statued fulgurite Closed my eyes, shed a tear She made my eyelids disappear Gwendolyn, am I destined to drop my jaw for you over and over again?
6.
Leave it to 1, 2, 3 Don’t do if not reasonably I live a modern life And if you don’t like what you see Simply close your eyes You don’t need to know You need to do what you’re told Bound to return to the dream I know Enter the dome city The lines are all single file to live a modern life I saw an impossible beast fly by Outside the city lines I closed my eyes We live the modern life
7.
Run from the Fungusaur Fight in the cosmic war Under the command of Captain Z-Bop’s Friendly Friends Bask in brutality Lose your virginity Under the command of Captain Z-Bop’s Friendly Friends

In the land where nothing thrives, impossible beasts endure a synthesis within their chemicals. The animals become a storm of sound. Superposed, their orbitals are growing more entangled with your feeble brain. You’ll welcome their millennial migration to your ears. Many trees dance bare The sky stood gray And the dome city Maintained its shape But lo and behold A thunderous boom of doom arose The storm of sound at howling height will eradicate everything they know The end is mere unless you fear Every atom revealed to your mind’s eye Consciousness of commotion marches to the sound of eardrums. Nature would adore the vacuum if it had nowhere else to sit.
10.
Ray of shade gracefully over the sea My old bed suspended at the hand hand of gravity Whispered a phrase The wind took away Exhaled a salty breath Air in a cage All I see, exploding light in symmetry A tidal wave from the sun to anything I turn away those warming rays Must be the moon in me Wild and free Like cosmic debris Out of its orbit Blown to smithereens Now I sit at the shores of the bottomless sea And I taste only salt and breathe only breeze Distantly festering an explosion meant to be!
11.
I met the man with the diamond eye. “I’d rather be naked than be right.” That’s what he said to me. “The narrator told me that this tale is too tall. We should spare em all and break the fourth wall into infinity.” “Everything comes undone. Let’s make fun of everyone.” So, the man took a ridiculous oath to let the listener know that he knows this is a story He says “Ha Ha Ha!” And then the man shouldered me through a plot hole. Now I’m a speaker in your stereo. I’m your narrator. If you’re endeavoring to find closure Just remember that it won’t be over, not until the end.

about

Family Animals — ‘The End Is Mere’

THE GOOD: Scranton natives Family Animals enters its second decade together with the super-groovy “The End Is Mere.”

THE BAD: Nah.

THE NITTY GRITTTY: Once again, the Viola brothers and their buddy Frank have created something “unclassifiable.” “Mere” straddles many fences, takes more than a few left turns and smashes multiple genres in the process.

“Push Play” kicks off the proceedings with a loopy bit of Ween-esque playfulness. From there, we plow through the Grateful Dead-like jam “Gimmie Jim-Jims,” neo-psychedelic buzz of “Nuclear Confusion,” stoned rocker “The Modern Life,” weird workout “Guitarbot 4000 and the Two Tongue Twins” and the melodic yet foreboding “A Speaker in Your Stereo.” The variety is trippy, the music all-encompassing.

“Mere” is a deep, multi-textured mixed bag — a true headphones album that works best when savored as a whole. Trust me. You won’t be bored.

BUY IT?: Definitely. And go for the CD — NOT the download. The Swims’ Brian Langan did the slick artwork. - Mike Evans / Sounds
